2016 Lesson Plans!

Week 1:
Day 1- Get to know you and 5 senses
Details: We’ll start out the day by decorating name tags and playing a few “get to know you” games. After we learn everyone’s names, we will learn about the Summer Sprouts rules! We will then head outside and trace our bodies with chalk. We’ll talk about how we are all unique and each have different talents, likes, and dislikes. Then we’ll play some games like fruit basket to continue to get to know each other. Then we’ll come back inside to eat a snack, learn about our five senses, and read Little Bunny’s Sleepless Night, which deals with the five senses. Then we’ll explore our senses with some fun activities: a gooey science experiment, a fun guess-the-smell/object game, finger painting, etc. We’ll finish the day by filling out our “what I learned about today” sheets. Day One is going to be fun!

Day 2- Jungle Adventure
Details: The second day of sprouts will start with making jungle binoculars, then with our binoculars we will go on an animal hunt- identifying several types of animals on the way. After, we will learn about animal tracks- how to identify animal size based on tracks. Then we will do a craft relating to the tracks topic. We will then move outside and play jungle animal relay games. After the games we will slow down and read a jungle related book and eat a snack. Then we will make a paper plate parrot. We will wrap up the day with an exciting jungle obstacle course and fill out the “What I learned about today” worksheet.

Day 3- The Body
Details: Today we will start with exploring some medical equipment. Sprouts will hear heart beats through a stethoscope, try on leg braces, and use an eye chart. From there we will introduce the skeletal system. We will put together a skeleton and talk about the functions of bones. We will then “make our own hand x-ray” and discuss how x-rays work. We will finish the skeletal system by playing pin the skull on the skeleton. We will move onto the immune system by going outside and playing germ tag. To slow things down, we will then read the book Parts. Then we will move back inside and draw a germ while eating a snack. We will then move onto our last topic of the day, organs. We will learn organ locations and functions by playing “where’s the organ.” The sprouts will finish the day with our “What I Learned about Today” worksheet. Day three will be great!

Day 4- Music Day and Graduation
Details: Day 4 will start with an introduction to famous composers. Sprouts will listen to short clips of each composer’s song. We will then move into instrument families. We will play “Name that instrument family.” Then we will show several instruments, sample playing a guitar, violin, and piano. Then we will move outside and play Instrument rainbow tag. We will move inside and learn about the treble and bass clefs, attempting to trace both symbols. Then we will compose our own short songs and the teachers will play them on the piano for them to hear. We will finish the music aspect with making our instruments and singing songs with them. Then we will move into our graduation section by making graduation hats and receiving our Session 1 diplomas!


Week 2:
Day 1- Get to know you and you are Special/Hobbies
Details: Today we will focus on how all of our sprouts are different, but all special. We will start day one off with making names tags. Then we will play the “Name sign game” and “Purple Stew.” Then we will move onto crafting paper-bag puppets of ourselves and having a puppet show. Then we will read a book titled You are special and talk about how we are all unique. Then we will play the game “if you like this do this.” Then we will explore hobbies. We will shoot baskets, roll cookie dough (and eat cookies), write a class story, and kick a soccer ball. We will finish the day with the “Today I learned About” worksheet. Day one will be spectacular!

Day 2- Under the Sea
Details: We will start day two with learning  a little bit about animals that live in the ocean. We will then move into making a paper plate jellyfish, observing waves in a wave bottle, and figuring out which objects sink or float in water illustrating density. Then we will read The Rainbow Fish, and talk about being good friends. Then we’ll head outside to play “Shark Tag” and other ocean-themed games. We will then craft our very own paper fish bowls. Lastly, we’ll head inside for snack time and everyone will fill out a “what I learned today” sheet. Day Two is going to be an exciting day!

Day 3- Rocks and Fossils
Details: Today we will start by introducing the three types of rock: Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic, through a song and actions. To reinforce this concept we will then complete a rock cycle coloring page. Then we will practice classifying the types of rocks. From there we will move into the fossil portion of the day by having a “dinosaur bone dig” and constructing a dinosaur from the bones. We will also make a salt dough dinosaur foot fossil. In this process we will explain how fossils are formed. We will slow things down by reading How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight and eating a snack. The day will end with our “Today I learned About” worksheet. Day 3 is going to be super!

Day 4- Weather and Graduation
Details: We will begin by introducing common types of clouds such as stratus, cumulus, cirrus, and cumulonimbus through a cloud dance. We will also practice identifying them by playing “Name that cloud.” We will then head outside and have cloud races with cotton balls and straws. We will also talk about weather safety and demonstrate correct practices. We will then create our own weather scene with cotton balls. To say goodbye to some of our sprouts, we will read The Hello Goodbye Window. Then we will move on to making our graduation hats and receiving our graduation certificates for week 2! The Sprouts will also fill out the “Today I learned About” worksheet. Day 4 will be a blast!


Week 3
Day 1- Get to know you/Summer Sprouts Olympics/Healthy bodies
Details: Day Two is going to be super fun!  To start with, we will play a few get to know you games and then we’ll talk about keeping our bodies healthy and strong. Then we’ll each make a “Healthy Checklist” that the children can check off at home when they eat fruit and veggies, get eight hours of sleep, exercise, etc. We will then learn the Olympics and its history. Then, we’ll begin our very own Summer Sprout Olympics! We’ll have our own “Opening Ceremonies” complete with a paper torch and parade. Each child will make their own medal, which will be awarded to them at the end of the games. Then our events will begin! We’ll have an obstacle course, a long jump, a 5-meter dash, and many other fun “events.” We’ll stretch before and after the events, and once they’re done, we’ll have snack time, which will be followed by our awards ceremony (every child will receive the medal they made). Finally, we’ll fill out our “what I learned today” sheets and close the Summer Sprouts Olympics.

Day 2- Ancient Civilizations
Details: We will briefly cover Mesopotamia and talk about the hanging gardens of Babylon. The Sprouts will also be able to plant their own bean seed. We will then move onto Ancient Greece where we will learn a bit about Greek mythology. Then we will head outside and have a “chariot race.” After the races, we will make Greek laurel leaf crowns. Now we will move on to Ancient Egypt. We will learn about the mummification process and the mythology behind it while wrapping the Sprouts in crepe paper. We will also have “three-legged mummy races.” We will then head inside and make Egyptian collars or bracelets. We will finish the day with eating snack and filling out “What I Learned Today” sheets.

Day 3- Art
Details: We will begin the day by introducing famous painters and their works: Van Gogh, Da Vinci and others. We will discuss different mediums of art and try out a few, such as sculpting, mosaic, abstract and watercolor. Then we will introduce the color wheel and talk about complementary colors. Then we will head outside and play rainbow tag and twister. Then we will come inside and read Little Mouse’s Book about Colors. We will then talk about how rainbows and made and how we are able to see colors. We will also learn all the colors of the rainbow. Then we will fill out our “What I Learned Today” worksheet.

Day 4- The magic of science/Graduation
 Details: We’ll start out with music time, and learn a bit about famous scientists—our “magicians” for the day. We’ll then do some fun science experiments—a diet coke and mentos geyser, a volcano, gravity-defying water, bending water, capillary paper towels, and testing the speed of hot and cold molecules. Then we’ll head outside to play some games, and come back in for snacks. Then we’ll read a book, make our own graduation caps, and have our graduation ceremony for week 3! Finally, we’ll fill out our “what I learned today” sheets. This will be a fun conclusion to a great week!


Week 4
Day 1- Bug Day and Get to know you
Details: We will start by playing get to know you games for our new sprouts, then we will move into learning about the butterfly life cycle. To do this, we will act it out with crepe paper and other exciting actions. To reinforce the concept we will then complete a butterfly life cycle coloring page. We will then change it up and do bug dancing. After dancing, we will slow it down and talk about bugs around us and what they eat. From there, we will move outside and have bug races! Then we will read “The very quiet Cricket” and eat a snack. Then we will use our imaginations and fill out our “if I was a bug I’d be…” worksheet. We will then talk about how butterflies wings match and do some butterfly wing puzzles to help them remember. To end the day we will complete the “What I Learned Today” worksheet.

Day 2- Space Day
Details: The Sprouts will begin this day by being introduced to the planets through a silly song and planet cards. We will teach them about constellations and help them create their own, legend and all. To change things up, we will head outside and play planet and comet tag. While outside we will teach the difference between rotation, revolving, and tilt. We will use these concepts in creating our solar-system. We will head back inside and have a quick snack. To reinforce the planets we will then do a planet coloring page. Then we will play planet rainbow tag and order the planets relay. We will finish the day with “What I Learned about Today” worksheet. Day Two will be out-of-this-world!

Day 3- Let’s Pretend!
Details: Today our Sprouts can come to class dressed up in their favorite princess or prince attire! (No weapons, please! :D) We’ll start with music time, then introduce the theme and talk a little bit about real royalty, both past and present. Then we’ll each make a crown, and have a coronation and a knighting ceremony! Once everyone is an official prince, princess, or knight, we’ll play some fun fairy-tale games: a Humpty-Dumpty egg relay, a glass slipper hot n’ cold hunt, follow the dragon, and pin the fire on the dragon! Then we’ll come inside to eat a snack, read a fairy-tale story, and write our own short fairy-tale. Then we’ll each make our own magic wand and plant our own “magic bean” plant. We’ll finish off by “jousting” with spoons and plastic armor, and finally filling out our “what I learned today” sheets. Day Three will be a magical day!

Day 4- Inventor Day and Scientific Method/ Graduation

Details: We will start day 4 off with talking about famous inventors and their inventions. From there we will introduce the scientific method through a song and play order the scientific method relay. After that, the Sprouts will be able to put all these ideas together in an activity. We will provide many supplies for sprouts to craft their own “inventions” and allow the Sprouts to apply the scientific method to their inventions (with help of course). We will then read a science related book and eat a snack. We will then move on to the last section of the day, graduation. We will make our graduation caps and have a graduation ceremony where the Sprouts will receive their week 4 diploma. Then the Sprouts will fill out their last “What I learned today” worksheet.
